Latvia is drinking beer
The main alcoholic drink in Latvia is beer (alus). A lot of places serve imported beer but the local brews are fine, and usually cheaper - the most common brand is Aldaris. Worth trying once (and probably once only) is Rigas Melnais Balzams, or Riga black balsam, a kind of bitter made according to a secret recipe that combines various roots, grasses and herbs.
Outside the capital there isn't a great choice of watering-holes, but most places will have at least one bar, cafè or restaurant. If you want to sample local drinking culture head for a beer bar , though these are mostly male-only hangouts dedicated to serious imbibing. For something more civilized try cafés where, though alcohol is usually served, abstainers won't feel out of place. Coffee ( kafija ) and tea ( teja ) are usually served black - if you want milk ( piens ) and/or sugar ( cukurs ) you'll have to ask.
